You have a preference other than advisory and what you want to tackle on this in Spanish whatever you want I'll do the scheduling thing since it's like rain to me at this point and then our successes and then cuz I'm in a build on that as well around the attendance that we're making strides on the participants in the the chat box on the over here so I'm not backlit it looks like I'm in a a camping experience okay we're live good afternoon Buena start of this I was bothering you and the needle see what you seem is gracias por purchased in West Town Hall good afternoon and thank you so much for joining us I guess it's really technically this morning in our town hall we are technically in what we're calling Week 1 of the school year we had a very short start to the week on August 12th I was mostly an opportunity for our Scholars to get to know teachers and basic General expectations where is right now this week you're really kicking off into the academic side of their course schedule I would be helpful to say hello we miss you and to inform you of things that we presented previously but just to make sure that we're all clear because there's a lot of new Shane just for this year that takes some time schedule is very complicated and so we're going to go over the schedule again and just clarify few updates with it we're also going to talk with you about some of our successes so far since we've been in the early stages of the Fall 2020 semester ordering a sore throat, suppressant on Westeros Oreos escalera's Temple Caso que necesito algo Mas estamos muy agradecido por Tu participation what's already move right in this is our opening slide that from last presentation just reminding folks that safety and the health of everybody a call ons from parents dollars to staff number one priority as we continue on with the school year another reminder that our schedule was built with the legal requirements that are summarized in the 80 77 and I'll give you a moment to read. And as you're reading it for those of you referring to English version while there's the reading in Spanish the summary this is to make sure that we have live touchpoints daily Monday through Friday for our scholars in our schedule does exactly that I need better Lighting in here these are some key terms the key terms that you will see I'm going Lee throughout the schedule asynchronous refers to videos of Scholars watch on their own time and also refers to the independent work that they will do on their own time however we do have a schedule on which we want them to get into a routine synchronous the middle term refers to live session user live in the moment very imperative that folks are on time to those and interacting in the classroom will go over the finer details shortly third term again is independent work time this is really spread out across the week every single day my mom at 3. In Spanish next slide please here's a summary of the work week it's really broken up into three parts the first two days are all about watching the lesson the next 2 days when season 3 Cesar all about interacting as if you were in a regular classroom but virtually and this is a time where Scholars and teachers gets interact to really ensure a deeper understanding of what the lesson was showing on Monday and Tuesday and then Friday is where it shifts into a greater focus of independent work for Scholars to really buckle down and do the best they can so that on Monday the following week they submit completed assignments and as you're reading this over in Spanish our goal is to work within a range of three to four hours for each assignment when you do the math for a scholar who has course is not all do but for those who do it's anywhere between 20 and 24 hours across the week it could go a little bit outside of that range though. That should be the average ever met before and now I glanced at Monday and Tuesday in finer detail this schedule shows what teachers are doing and Scholars doing so looking at the student schedule you see that they have advisory on both Monday and Tuesday and they have three instructional classes if they have total of six classes there are several scenarios most of our 9th graders only have 5 social science is not offered at the 9th grade level social science shown on a Tuesday schedule on the right-hand side from 12 to 1:30 right in the middle and 9th graders who don't have that class we want them to think of this as an opportunity that during that exact same time they're doing independent work for all their other five classes so that they have a little more extra time this is part of our way to help transition 9th graders to high school before they take on a heavier load and demand which will occur sophomore and junior year Los Dias Lunes martes Los Lunas Las elecciones Aisha has consoles cuando Los alumnos Novara the nearest Ace classes I gross case cinco clases por ejemplo Lima Memorial Los alumnos in Alvarado tenancingo classes you know when a Clase de Historia is the classiest on Mario and Marcus Dan Lozano Rochester Tiempo es mejor que trabajan independiente call who's the signal kitchen and oppressed classes Nosotros estamos haciendo esto para Gallos antes de tener Mas responsabilidad and it'll testimony on Sagrado concise course next Wednesdays and Thursdays part two and this is what I really want those to take in it's really really important that our Scholars to everything that they're scheduled to do for Monday and Tuesday because that sets them up for a much more successful experience live and that's what Wednesday and Thursdays are all about us our favorite days a week really because this is the time where we have a simulation that most represents a regular classroom set this is that time where teachers and Scholars gets be live with one another virtually and interacts ask questions and really really begins to make people understanding of what they watched on Monday and Tuesday so the time is supercritical and so we refer to it as part is we the first part was I do it's the teacher showing you how it's done the we do is we're doing this together and then when you get the Friday it's the I do I'm on my own a little bit more I can seek help if I need it but I think I've got it and I'm do the best I can so that I'm ready to turn in my assignments with accuracy proficiency for Monday morning I just seen Monday or sorry Wednesday and Thursday it's an odd. Day and an even. One through five 9:30 to 2:30 and Furious 2 4 through 6 the same time the reason it's written that way it's really just written that way to tell you that you have a big chunk of time do the work then it's going to bury right it's the some classes some some Scholars I need more time with another's and at the same point the time in which some choose to or required to meet with teachers during that day's going to vary so it's just too complicated to be super specific for that it's a little bit more of a flexible day is the way to think about it so just just making that clear so you don't get too worried when you look at that time frame do you know Alexa weather tomorrow advisory thank you next you want me to handle this one let me know keep on going to English and Spanish thank you I'm so if you got a little bit of advice going to have it Monday Tuesday and Friday these are between 9 to 9:30 and what we're going to do. We're going to do an advisory is cultural activities that are different fun activities Holt activities after school maybe a movie night different things like that so the students were going to be helping us out and our students acknowledge their going to be hosting these activities every Tuesday we are moving now we're going to embark on a very exciting it's all anti-racism BLM kind of initiative we're going to start talking about what it means what that means in a community allyship how we can be allies how we can help our own Community diving into our Collective history that's going to be pretty pretty exciting I'm also our beautiful towns in Maine is going to have time during advisory anyting epidemic latest College you know class what classes did you take AP classes just everything that's happened is that going to have the time to talk to you next Monday Tuesday Friday and it starts at 9 so important that your students attend again just make sure they let go Buena Vista I'm in a moment is it bad for him call Mom recommend FPL yeah, where are you Italian restaurant what is a disposable can you fill out the Medalist in advisory GIF all right just another view of the another one was trying to trying to get everybody the visual the news here so it's just another way of saying the schedule I will add to it. I can't say enough as much as it's difficult for our kiddos to our Scholars sites to get into the routine of watching lessons at a specific time they really needs to be cut it's not only will it help him with time management and staying organized but eventually we will have in-person learning on campus and so the sooner that Scholars fall into a routine that we've laid out and are we please schedule the better off they'll be for Success when we're asking certain groups of Scholars at a time to come on campus for live teaching in person at Collins on campus still a little ways out from that but the it's going to be a lot more successful if we get into a rhythm of doing it virtually first cuz the schedule won't change much Delfino get 710 schedule for KI Los Alamos cuando Mas o Menos mayores stay Espanol I mean Whatever Lola mismo again this is the same schedule I'm just a different a different way of viewing it Keep On Keepin On what you want to speak to that audreanna so all of our teacher sent our students or students there's demons through Google Classroom so if you're having any issues I was having any issues with the zoom make we would invite first email the teacher and the teacher should should email you within 24 hours and let you know hey this is what's going on I'm in the meeting you want to also if you try to log on 95 by minutes before just to make sure that everything everything working at your internet's working that you're ready to try to log on 5 minutes before we lock down about 10 minutes before this discussion just to make sure that everything was good I'm so alone Monday at 1 for electronics okay I can mess up what I look with him and got a new phone materialist and if you want to reuse call expectations at your Delfino. Same thing we've been saying redundant know they all have their schedules at this point since reminders this is what I really want to touch on I want to talk about how it's going so far we this is really really a lot of high anticipation anticipation to know okay we have the schedule is communicate did it out probably over communicated it I apologize if any parents are feeling exhausted but better safe than sorry but the big question is how is it actually going you know what's actually happening with it and so I have some information to share with you that makes me very very proud but I also have some pushes for us to to improve positive daily routine for Oliver Scholars is to complete a survey online the survey surf it's part of our daily attendance and in addition it provides valuable information for us to know whether or not we need to check in on certain individual Scholars or whatever mean it could be technical needs it can be social emotional academic personal really really important survey that they're filling out everyday and so the good news is we're hearing from almost every single scholar yesterday I think we heard from two or three full grade levels at 100% so we has some really outstanding success on that I was also really happy to see that when we did the zoo meetings which or even harder filling out a survey in the morning is not nearly as hard as making sure you're at the right place at the right find r e x a day on Wednesday three times a day for some folks on Thursday that's much harder routine to follow and I was really happy that our first day of doing it we had 75% of our Scholars do it it improves the next day to 82% that should say Thursday that's my type oh I apologize so we'll fix that before uploading this but that. That's me and then on Wednesday yesterday we had 85% whatever they want to draw your attention to our the dates. The days of the week is much and that there's a steady increase of attendance and now I want to talk to you why that's so important as that number goes up the likelihood of us being able to provide the support academically for our Scholars to pass classes and stay on their graduation track is also going to go walk it's not a guarantee but one thing I could tell you is that is that number dipped we're going to have severe challenges we're going to have challenges of our Scholars successfully completing assignments and benefiting from all the learning that takes place during all these times so this is where I really need support from all of our families and parents out there with the schedule is really making sure that when you look at those times do you see your child doing the right things at the right time are they engaged in those classes are they logging into those classes are they doing all the things were asking to be doing during that time and it's really a schedule that's built on fairness as we you didn't really call it out but if you look at it there are what we call Brain Breaks in between each class that's intentional it can be exhausting to be doing academic straight through the whole day without any little mini breaks along the way we purposely put those in there and they can be a number of things some of them could we we hope at times there rest or exercise we hope that's the case eating water but they might be other things maybe they have to help a little bit around the house maybe they have to do some chores maybe they have to do a couple things I get that I had to do that as a kid too and maybe that's the more appropriate time for where some of those take place we also know kids are kids and kids like to go on video games and TVs and and do other things with their computers and I'm sure as a parent you seen that many times we like posed to be doing school work right now what I would encourage your parents out there to do is to approach the situation like this hey right now the time says you're supposed to be on a live Zoom meeting with your math class I see that you're having fun doing something else but check it out in an hour you have a 30 minute break or an hour break let's pause on that it's okay that you want to do that at the right time reward yourself after you work for it's okay to do those things I don't think we want to try to radically change your child lies especially for those who need need that space and not time for themselves it's just a dividing it and putting it in the right block of time that's all and that's all we're asking and I think we really developed the schedule that is fair to that and if we stay the course on that we can watch this number go up and as watch this number go up I promise you we're going to see everything else go up with it this is not about ADA this is not about budget this is about your child's learning and making sure they're successful to your calling in a very challenging set of circumstances is which is currently virtual so thank you for those of you who have really really done an amazing job and pushing your child to be one of those who is falling into that percentile that you're seeing there last thing I'm going to say on it so just a really help you understand the sense of urgency 85% is a good number right but you know what it means when we look at it from a student number this means that 90 student almost a hundred kid are not doing this at a lot of things that aren't doing it and that's the kind of information that I have to look at his principal oh my goodness 85% sounds good but I don't feel good at all knowing that 990 students in our school out of 600 might struggle and not produce the kind of works are capable laws and the grade level ready by the end of the school year so that's that's what I really want you to take in consideration as we pause on this slide off to a good start but we need to keep doing our best that's a lot of translate sorry have fun sounds like time to have a mountain so if that if they look at it. History invented on Jonathan did you get to help me answer some of the questions that are coming up a question that is there I'm helping that parent even a question I can answer the question around I think a good question that came up earlier on was around required to turn on their screen I think it's worth clarifying to all parents around that one so with respect to that we've gotten some legal guidance and our current legal guidance it could change over time at this is the virtual learning world and we're still getting used to it we're not going to require students to show their faces on their videos we completely recognize how by not doing that we will do by funk the honor System to know if they're present but we have some strategies that we are already using to get around that but they're also strategies more importantly to keep classes in live sessions engage in any way example using the chat feature frequently to call on Scholars check in with them doing breakout rooms is in as a very common feature as well if someone's not joining their breakout room it's a direct indication that they're not following along well the more frequent that both of those features are being used during a live Zoom session the better be in ensuring folks are present even though call bearface which we wish we could see is not always shown on that same note we are encouraging keyword encouraging our Scholars to display a profile image of their photos on when stringing their video live and they have the option to do it we're just not going to require it there are situations around Equity that come into play when you do require that not all Scholars are comfortable showing the background of their homes we understand that you can choose a virtual background to get around that as well but it also has been issues with folks doing some bull and screenshots of images of people patching a metal at a funny moment so to speak and and doing inappropriate sayings with the images that they're capturing of their peers there's a number of reasons around it but the short version is we will not at this time requiring our Scholars to show their live faces the way we are during a zoom presentation the other side of that coin is our teachers are encouraged to do recorded versions of the sessions so that for anyone who misses out on attending a live session they can refer back to those recorded sessions does record sessions that are not to be shared publicly painting outside of Collins and outside of our Collins Google Drives and platforms that's that's an actual law that we need everyone to follow and it's actually very important that we're all together on that one on the same age because of student who decides share videos or video the video to do that publicly is not going to have a really good outcome that's an illegal move to make so we all said everybody respect the learning environment as best they can we are working on establishing a much more clear set of Zoom Norms or Scholars as we go along hope that helps look in the camera orita in traffic Kalamazoo 10 benefit porefessional the number volume integral corita Mexican lol Escuela any other questions Micheladas no I think we're good okay well we really appreciate everybody's time this morning will do monthly Town Halls at minimum just to make that we're staying connected with one another and in the meantime in between those please reach out if you have any questions concerns or need any additional guidance on the work ahead and thank you so much music encuerado con El clima 1918 Collins we're probably in a debrief with you yeah before
