I mainly work with seniors help them with anything college-related why I fell out, probably about college applications financial aid applications if they want to learn more about school major exploration of things I'm there to support them through it today we're going to be talking about financial aid and if you have any questions you can go ahead and type in the chat box I meet yourself whichever you prefer to do it what is financial aid so financial aid is any source of financial support given to students who are studying for a university or college degree so in other words it's federal and state government and organization that will help pay for the cost of University or College so typically when you get financial aid it is to cover what is called the cost of attendance and on the cost of attendance when you're attending college it includes tuition and fees which is at a fixed cost so that is something that where the price isn't going to fluctuate it's usually a set cost depending on the school it will vary between a used PacSun a private the tuition and fees for each each institution will vary amongst like those three but they are at a fixed cost they won't change with them also includes books and supplies which is a variable cost in addition to room and board so like storming or living at home transportation and other miscellaneous costs so those are very that institutions all the community colleges are a lot cheaper than the private university and like I said that's the fixed-rate that's so that the cost of that is generally the same all of the csu's will have generally this I'm out for fees and tuition fees all the community colleges will have the same amount the University of California's will have the same amount and then the private universities will have assumed that the only difference will see is when you're like comparing before but they are and then the textbooks room and board and miscellaneous either the variable cost that I was talking about so they are just an estimation of what the institution thinks your child going to spend on six books on how much they're going to spend on like dormian we're living at home and like their personal miscellaneous cause these are just like an estimation they're not a set price so they can change it can you lower that can be higher it just depends on eating and things like that how much federal or state financial aid can your child gets the most financial aid packages are based on Financial need of each family they base it on what is called an expected family contribution so FC and it's just a number that is calculated using a formula based on common factors of income properties family size number of students with another student in college so you will get like when you receive when you apply for when you try to apply for financial aid They will receive a e f c and it is a number that can vary as well doesn't necessarily mean that how much you're going to contribute to their there like they're off their age like their tuition fees and stuff that doesn't mean that's how much you're going to pay it's just like a number that is based on the phone and then they base it on your financial need so the cost of attendance minus the FC is the financial need that you will have remaining after that so what but you song that the previous side the entire thing they will subtract what your expected family contribution is and then that Gap is what the financial need will be and like I said they are based on each family your income and so there are a couple of types of financial aid you have scholarships and grants work-study and loans into each of those right now so for scholarships they can reduce the need to work or borrow and each scholarship has different requirements and requires an application other servers play ships and they're easy to find but be careful when you are looking for scholarship because there are scams and if it's a scholarship or program that is charging for like the application or for any type of service from them that is more than likely a scam cuz I won't ask for any money from you Saudi a couple examples of scholarships and sorry some scholarships are merit-based which means it is based on the GPA and the grades other scholar ships are based on Sports all of these aren't as common and as easy to get as people think they're also cultural scholarships and institutional scholarships that are given directly from the college that your child is attending then there are also private scholarships as well so finding scholarships is like finding a part-time job you do have to do a little research and there are certain requirements for the scholarship it just depends on the ones that you're applying for and then we have another type of Aid which is federal and state grants grants are a form of money that does not have to be repaid so there is the federal Pell Grant which is based on the Family's Financial need and the amount of the grant will vary from $555 to $6,195 Grant is a federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity is that they are limited grants that depend on financial need and those vary from $100 to $4,000 and then we also have the cow grants which is for residents of California and each Grant a b and c is based on GPA and the family's Financial need and what type of college you're attending so for example for the Cow Grant a that is typically on reward looked at it pray for those who have a 3.0 GPA or higher and the amount per that is about $12,570 this crack is usually given to those who are attending a used CD and then year is the Cal grant B paper that one is a 2.0 or above and that one is around five thousand and $700 and that's typically awarded to those who are attending this yet the csu's and then Cal grant see that one is of the Community College based so that one is around a Thousand Eleven Hundred $1,200 and we awarded to those who are going to attend like the Community College and then there are also institutional Grant so that is given by the idea to see a few that you see depending on which one you're going to that's giving him the school itself and it'll say like institutional Batman on it so this this is the the income ceiling for the Cal grant like I had mentioned earlier they do depend on you family income I'm so in order to qualify for a Cal grant a or C this is the the income cap for each of those and like I said so it would have to be in order to get Cal grant a you would have to have a 3 I know her above and then have an income below at or below this number depending on your family size and then for Cal grant B that would be 2.0 or above and then depending on your family on site as well stop sharing sorry the work City where work city is something that's available for families to pay some financially and then this is a really great opportunities for students to be able to work on campus or near the university and a lot of times too they're in the University a lot of the job that are offered to college students are work-study students the most of the jobs available are going to be based on if they have work City or not and it out this is a really great and we also ship our students to be able to pay for education. and sis and in a really awesome thing if I don't work City to is a lot of the companies know that the students are right no students at the University so they're willing to help them with flexible hours but some other combinations that students may receive while work answer to work the work study program is if they're having like finals week they may not work that week the same thing for midterms or if they need like a day off for a for a tooth to practice for an exam or study for an exam day going to go ahead have those days off without them impacting their the work schedule and the terms of like you not being able to get tender them in for future employment and in the way that students are able to apply for the work-study ascend FAFSA going to ask them are you interested in work City yes no or I'm sure so we always encourage students to put yes and then if work studies available it'll be under financial aid award letter but it's better just to have it and the first to be available in do decide to work because then they're not going to be able to change their mind later on and then probably even try to get a work-study job Lone Star Loans is money that is borrowed and has to be repaid so they're a couple of different types of loans so the subsidized Stafford loan is based on family's economic needs and then for this loan the government pays to interest for as long as a student is in the college University including if they ask once they graduate with a fascist if it decides to go on to a doctor programmer master's program interest the unsub loan that's where it says not valid because it's not. financial aid and student dust pay the interest in Italy after taking also to like for the counter and as well you may still be eligible for the Cal grant even though you may not be out if I eligible for the federal grants are there still some money that may be frame you know things may get lost universities might be backed up so they may not be able to get that finished that award letter by me first and that's the reason why we always just advice just do it before we leave for winter break this year December 16th so think of December 16th as at the electric and they're able to get that finished award letter p for May 1st and then once they apply this how to tell if there's a change in the family's financial situation to it's also really important for the college's to know do it because this information they can submit it on the 2020 taxes so if as well and that's how they register but whether they fell out the FAFSA or The Dramatics do you have to register so what it means that the with the selective service is it's not so much where they're registering to join army like really like for example of when they recruited and then they just go and let you know not in that sense it's a more so like in the event that if there was ever a draft similar to how it occurred back when we have to be in a more couple of decades ago then that's what that word means it's more fun actually drafted if that's the case but it's different than joining the Army like we need to sign up and you go to Camp right away it's different the next question is can we request a one-on-one with a child counseling oh yes of course yes I can go ahead and put that credits be highly encouraged system with a counselor just so we can review in terms of like what credits are missing and the plan for that yes great question so we are helping the students fill out the application Ida and their government class so won't be there tomorrow so we're there tomorrow and then we're there next Friday as well and we were there last Friday so it's been there consistently almost every Friday up in the store fill out either at the Finish later location or their college applications as well so tomorrow they can come with their documents to or next Friday as well that's what we're hoping that was both yes so in terms of like so credit so if they're that does long as they're able to get their diploma like a beast next year and college in the fall then it can apply for FAFSA so even if they finished in the event that there is do need to attend next summer with us to to make up credit if that's the case they'll still need to apply this year I have posted their emails
